Cherry Orchard is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) with responsibility for Child Protection is Ms A Jaswal. We recognise that some children may be the victims of neglect, physical, sexual or emotional abuse and all staff are well placed to identify such abuse and respond quickly and effectively. If you do have a concern about a child’s well-being please report this to one of our DSLs; any member of staff as an initial point of contact.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as

protecting children from maltreatment
preventing impairment of children's mental and physical health or development
ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes

Children’s Advice and Support Service (CASS)

The Children's Advice and Support Service (CASS) provides a single point of contact for professionals and members of the public who want to seek support or raise concerns about a child.

They want to keep all children and young people in Birmingham safe from harm. If you are concerned about a child please contact them. They will listen, assess your concerns, and can take action if a child is at risk.

Cherry Orchard's Pastoral Team

At Cherry Orchard we have a friendly and caring Pastoral Team, who in addition to the class teacher, help provide guidance and support to children when they might be unhappy, worried or need to talk. Our Learning Mentors are Mrs Fletcher and Miss Swikidisa. Their work is overseen by our Assistant Head Teacher, Ms Jaswal, and the impact of initiatives is measured by the Senior Leadership Team and reported to the School Governors.

Through the Pastoral Team, our key aim is to support children socially, emotionally or personally to overcome their barriers to learning and ensure they achieve their personal, social and academic goals. We work closely with children and their families and strive to ensure that individuals feel safe, valued and listened to.

Our Learning Mentors:
· Help children manage difficulties in their lives.
· Help children develop their understanding of being a good friend and how to co-operate with others.
· Work with children to raise self-esteem.
· Motivate children to be successful and achieve.
· Encourage children them to be more self-sufficient and independent.
· Listen to their views.

Support is offered through:
· One to one mentoring sessions
· Focused group sessions
· Liaising with parents/careers and teachers to support pupil progress
· Shared, family conversations
· Extra help with transition at all levels
· Liaising with outside agencies

Prevent

Cherry Orchard Primary School is clear that exploitation and radicalisation should be viewed as a safeguarding concern and that protecting children from the risk of radicalisation is part of the school’s safeguarding duty. Please see our Safeguarding Policy at the bottom of this page.

If you have any concerns about extremism or radicalisation, they should be referred to Miss A Jaswal, our SPOC (single point of contact) and our Lead DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead).
